Privacy Policy

KidPacer helps parents shape how their children watch YouTube. To do that, it has to know a little about your family and about what is playing on your child's screen. This policy sets out what that is, what we do with it, and how you delete it.
The short version
- We keep what KidPacer needs in order to work: your Google name, email and photo, the PIN you choose (kept only as a one-way hash), the children you add (a name, and an age if you choose), their rules, and how much YouTube each child has watched and which videos.
- We don't sell your data, show ads, use analytics or tracking cookies, or build profiles of children.
- The picture and sound of a video never leave your child's computer or phone. What leaves is a few numbers about how fast-paced the video is, stored in a shared catalogue with no link to your child, your computer or your family.
- You can delete your account, and everything in it, from your family page at any time.
1. Who we are
KidPacer ("we", "us") runs kidpacer.com, the parent pages behind it, the KidPacer browser extension, and the KidPacer app for Android. KidPacer is the controller of the personal data this policy describes. To reach us about anything in it, use our contact page.
2. What we collect
About you, when you sign in
- Your Google account's name, email address, profile photo and account id. You sign in with Google, so we never see or keep a password, and we get no access to your email, files, contacts or YouTube account.
- When you last signed in.
- The PIN you choose for the grown-up question on your child's computer or phone. We keep only a salted, one-way hash of it, never the PIN itself, and a count of wrong guesses at your family's PINs, so that guessing is slowed down.
About your family, because you tell us
- Each child you add: a name (a first name or a nickname is all we need) and, only if you enter one, an age.
- Each child's rules: open or closed mode, allowed and blocked channels, word rules, whether Shorts and Games are on, the time limit, and the treats you set up and give.
- The other parents you invite, who join your family with their own Google accounts.
From your child's computer or phone, through the extension or the Android app
- A random id the extension makes up when it is set up. It is not tied to the device's hardware or to any other account.
- Which of your children is using that device, once that has been chosen on it.
- When the device was last on YouTube.
- How many seconds of video were watched, which is what runs the time limit.
- The video being watched: its YouTube id, title, channel and length.
- Which videos each child has watched: each one's YouTube id, title and picture, and when it was first and last watched. The child's page shows you the latest of them.
- Which videos KidPacer stopped for a child, and when.
- Channels your child blocks with the extension's Block button.
- The PIN typed into the grown-up question, sent to us to be checked against your family's and then forgotten. We count wrong tries, so that five in a row make your family's computers wait five minutes.
- While you have your child's live page open, and only then: what is on the screen right now, meaning the video, its title and channel, how far into it they are, and whether it is paused. We hold this in memory to show you, and never store it.
- Pace measurements: numbers the extension works out on the device from the picture and sound, such as how often the picture cuts and how loud and bright it is. See the video catalogue.
The extension does not collect what your child types into YouTube's search box, their YouTube or Google account, their cookies, their history, or anything from sites other than YouTube. It runs only on these sites:
- youtube.com, where it does everything this policy describes.
- youtu.be, YouTube's short links, which it only sends to its own page until the computer is paired.
- youtubekids.com, YouTube Kids, where the same rules, time limit and treats apply. Nothing is measured there.
- youtube-nocookie.com, and YouTube videos played inside other websites unless you turn that off for your child. The same rules and time limit apply, and it never reads the rest of the website a video is played inside.
- kidpacer.com, our own site, which it talks to, and whose family pages it puts behind the grown-up question on a paired computer.
The Android app opens only YouTube, YouTube Kids and kidpacer.com.
When you write to us
The name and email address you give, what you write, and, if you were signed in, which account it came from.
Like any website
Our hosting and network providers see the IP address and browser details of each request, in order to deliver it and to protect the site from abuse. Our server logs record requests and are overwritten on a rolling basis as they fill.
3. How we use it
- To run KidPacer: pairing computers and phones with your family, applying each child's rules, keeping the time limit, showing you what is on, and letting the parents of a family manage it together.
- To build the video catalogue that grades videos as calm, lively or intense.
- To keep KidPacer secure and working, and to fix what breaks.
- To answer you when you write to us.
- To meet our legal obligations.
We don't use your data or your child's for advertising, we don't sell or rent it, and we don't use it to profile anyone.
Where the law asks us to name a legal basis (in the EU and the UK, for example): running KidPacer for you is performing our agreement with you; keeping it secure, fixing it and building the catalogue are our legitimate interests; collecting your child's information rests on your consent as their parent, which you can withdraw at any time by removing the child; and some things we do because the law requires them.
4. The video catalogue
While a video plays, the extension measures its pace on your child's computer or phone, a few times a second, from the picture and the sound. The picture and sound themselves are never sent anywhere. What is sent is a handful of numbers for each five-second stretch, along with the video's id, title, channel and length.
These go into one catalogue shared by every family. The catalogue records videos, not viewers: it does not store which child, computer or family watched a video. Signed-in parents can browse it to see how a channel's videos are graded. Because it describes videos rather than people, we keep it for as long as KidPacer runs.
5. Children
KidPacer is used by parents. Children don't create accounts, don't sign in, and are never asked for an email address or any other way to contact them.
A parent installs the extension or the Android app, pairs the computer or phone with their family and adds their child. In doing so, the parent consents to our collecting the information about their child that this policy describes, for the purposes it describes. A parent can see what we hold about their child on the child's page, change it, stop further collection by removing the extension, the app or the device, and delete it by removing the child or deleting the account.
We don't use children's information for advertising and we never make it public. The only people who see it are the parents in that family.
If you believe a child has signed up for KidPacer by themselves, tell us through the contact page and we will delete the account.
This is how we meet the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) in the United States, and the extra protection that children's data is given in the EU and the UK. We also encourage you to tell children who are old enough to understand that KidPacer is on their computer or phone, and what it does.
6. Who we share it with
We don't sell or rent personal information. We share it only with:
- The other parents in your family. Everyone in a family sees its children, rules and computers, and each other's name, email and photo.
- Service providers that run KidPacer for us, and only as far as they need:
- Hostinger, which hosts our servers and database in Frankfurt, Germany.
- Cloudflare, which delivers the site and protects it from attacks.
- Google, to check your sign-in.
- YouTube. The live page plays the video you are watching along with from youtube-nocookie.com, and our pages show thumbnails and channel pictures from YouTube's servers. When you search for a channel, the words you type are sent to YouTube to find it.
- Authorities or others, when the law requires it, or when it is needed to protect someone's safety or our rights.
- A buyer or successor, if KidPacer is ever sold or merged. This policy would still apply to your data, and we would let you know.
7. YouTube and Google
KidPacer uses YouTube API Services. By using KidPacer you also agree to be bound by the YouTube Terms of Service. The Google Privacy Policy explains how Google handles data. We don't access your YouTube account or your child's.
KidPacer's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
8. Where your data is kept
Our servers are in the European Union, in Germany. Some of our providers, such as Cloudflare and Google, may process data in other countries, including the United States. Where they do, they rely on legal safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.
9. How long we keep it
- Your account and your family: until you delete your account.
- A child's information and rules, and which videos they watched or had stopped: until you remove the child or delete the account.
- A computer or phone you remove: it is detached from your family straight away, and what remains is its random id and when it was last seen.
- Sign-in sessions: they end after 30 days, or when you log out.
- Invites to your family: they expire after 24 hours.
- Messages you send us: for as long as we need them to answer you and to show how we handled your request.
- Server logs: overwritten on a rolling basis.
- What is on screen for the live page: never stored.
- The video catalogue: kept, because it is not about anyone.
When you delete your account, it is removed from our database straight away. If you were the last parent in your family, the family goes with you: its children, their rules, its invites and its computers. If other parents remain, only you are removed, and the family stays with them.
10. Your rights
You can see and change most of what we hold on your own pages, and delete all of it with the Delete account button on your family page.
Depending on where you live, you also have the right to ask us for a copy of your data, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to or restrict how we use it, to take it elsewhere, and to withdraw your consent at any time. For any of these, write to us through the contact page. Sending it while you are signed in helps us confirm it is you. We will answer within 30 days.
If you are in the EU or the UK and unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to your data protection authority. We would be grateful for the chance to put it right first.
If you live in California: we don't sell or share personal information, as California law uses those words, and we will not treat you differently for using your rights.
11. Security
Everything between your browser and KidPacer travels over HTTPS. The cookie that keeps you signed in cannot be read by scripts on the page, and each computer is known only by a long random id. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach puts your data at risk, we will tell you, and the authorities, as the law requires.
12. Cookies and storage
KidPacer sets one cookie, yk_session, which keeps you signed in for up to 30 days. The site cannot work without it, so we don't ask for consent to it. We use no analytics, advertising or tracking cookies.
When you sign in, Google's sign-in window uses Google's own cookies, under Google's policy. The video on the live page comes from youtube-nocookie.com, YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode.
The sign-in page keeps the id of the computer you are setting up in your browser's session storage, until you close the tab. On your child's computer or phone, the extension or the app keeps its random id, which child is using it, that child's rules (including their name) and the state of the time limit in the browser's extension storage, so it can work before it has heard from us.
13. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will post the new version here with a new date. If a change affects how we use data we already hold, we will tell you on the site before it takes effect.
14. Contact us
Questions, requests and complaints: write to us through our contact page.
